In light of the current world situation and in front of any upcoming city or county shut-downs, we are closing Seminole Heights Community Gardens to all visitors.
What will this mean?
We will not open the garden on Saturdays for the foreseeable future. However, member gardeners will continue to tend the garden. If any visitors stop by we will kindly ask you to visit again in the future. Our garden water lilies will continue to water the garden. We will maintain the compost including community deposits which can be left in the buckets by the front gate.
We all think gardening is incredibly important in a time like this, but we’ll just have to do it separately for now. We look forward to seeing everyone again in the near future.
The heat has been brutal – we’re at close to 150 days where the temperature hasn’t dipped below 70 degrees! Despite this we’ve had things growing all summer: okra, of course, and sweet potatoes. Here are a few more of the green things in our summer garden.
Seminole Heights Community Garden is up for Best Community Garden again this year – PLEASE VOTE FOR US! 🙂
The Garden is open for visitors and volunteers Saturdays 9am – 12pm at 6114 River Terrace. We’d love to show you why we think it’s the best little community garden.
Garden members Doris and Ellen hosted the Davis Islands Garden Club for a visit to our garden on April 19th. The Garden Club has been incredibly generous, helping us fund important improvements as we develop our space: our water stations and the new entrance to our garden (pictured above).
It was an amazing morning! The weather was perfect … the garden looked beautiful. We had several members of the garden club show up … and they would also like to pop in on a Saturday morning to garden with us. I don’t know who had a better time … them or us!
We’re mixing things up this month and meeting 6:30pm on Tuesday April 16th at 7venth Sun Brewery. Grab a cool refreshing beverage and join us as we plan our upcoming Earth Day Birthday on April 20th and Art in the Garden on April 27th. We’ll probably discuss gardening as well!
We are working on a new entrance to our garden. Here is a preview:
We are making it even easier to visit our community garden! Soon we will no longer have to use our *kind* neighbor’s driveway for access.
Mark your calendars:
We are celebrating our 10th!!! Earth Day Birthday this year! Join us for an open house and potluck 10am – 12pm on Saturday April 20th. Bring a dish to share and your own plates (we have utensils).
Art in the Garden returns to our garden on April 27th, 10am – 11:30am. All are invited to come to the Garden and create an art work inspired by the beauty of nature around you. Many supplies will be available – lots of colors of paint, oil pastel crayons, scissors, glue, pictures for collage. Paint on paper or cardboard, palm fronds or rocks. Local artists will be assisting. Plein Air painters are welcome. No charge, but donations towards the supplies are appreciated.
All of this is possible due to the generosity of Tish and Tim Ganey, who allow us to garden on their property.
