Please save your small yogurt cups! We’re going to plan an Earth Day/birthday celebration in April, and we’d like to be able to give away seedlings in those cups. We’ll discuss this and other projects on Monday evening.

These beauties
It’s a gorgeous time of year. We haven’t been posting much because we’ve been busy in the garden: harvesting and planting. We could definitely use some rain so the Water Lilies didn’t have to work so hard, but everyone tries to help give the garden a good soak on Saturdays.
We’re typically in the garden on Saturdays from 9am – 12pm – sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later. Stop by (6011 Highland) and we’ll give you a tour!
What a fantastic day!
This past Saturday we hosted a group of USF student volunteers participating in their annual Stampede of Service. The volunteers arrived bright and early, the weather cooperated, and we all got to work. We spent the morning pulling weeds all around the edges and down the rows, turned the compost and sifted dirt, watered the plants that needed it, and had many interesting conversations about growing organic food. Many of the students took home greens (kale, collards, mustard greens) as well as tomatoes and lemongrass which we were so happy to share.
Thank you to the garden members who came out and provided guidance for the students, and Denise for bringing the refreshing lemon water!
It’s kale season!
Our kale is looking beautiful and we’ve been harvesting Red Russian and Lacinato kale for weeks. Our Curly kale should be ready soon.
This is a good time to remember sustainable harvesting of kale (and all leafy greens). A good rule of thumb is to never take more than a third of the leaves, as they are needed to keep the plant growing. If a kale plant has several healthy leaves, you can harvest a one or two leaves starting from the bottom of the plant, and then move on to the next plant. Snap off the stem or use a knife or scissors to cut the leaf at the base of the stem. Do not take just the leaf and do not take the whole plant! This allows the plant to continue growing and producing for your fellow gardeners. You can see sustainable harvesting in this video.
We have several kale patches so you should be able to harvest enough kale for your meal using this method. Sustainable harvesting is also the way to go with the mustard greens and our little chard patch, knowing that we will have a lot more chard in the new year!

We need leaves!
Are you cleaning up your yard and have bags of untreated leaves that you need to discard? We would love your leaves – we have a 4 bin compost system that we use to make our own organic dirt, and dry leaves are the “brown” layer necessary to balance out the veggie scrap “green” layer. We’re in the garden on Saturday mornings so please feel free to drop by with your bags of leaves. If that time doesn’t work, please contact us to coordinate another time! info.shcg@gmail.com

We had a fantastic day in the garden with the help of USF Student Volunteers during the annual city-wide service event called CHARGE. These students helped us weed and sift dirt and prep our garden for our upcoming fall planting. Thank you to all who came out today!
